Origin
The Hoya carnosa, also known as the Wax plant, originates from East Asia and Australia. This plant primarily grows in warm, moderately humid areas there. Most notably, the Hoya carnosa grows in the wild as an epiphyte, on trees and rocks.
Characteristics
The Hoya carnosa is a popular houseplant because of its beautiful, waxy flowers and shiny leaves. The leaves are large, thick and have a dark green colour. The flowers grow in clusters, are often tinted pink and have a distinctive, sweet smell. A unique characteristic of this plant is its long life span, which can easily span tens of years if properly maintained.
Care
The care for the Hoya carnosa is relatively simple. The plant has a strong preference for bright, indirect light and cannot withstand prolonged exposure to intense, direct sunlight. It is advisable to water the Hoya carnosa regularly, but the soil needs to dry out first between watering. Too much water can cause root rot. The maintenance is completed with an annual dose of basic fertiliser to support growth and flowering.
