Origin
The Monstera deliciosa, also known as the Swiss Cheese Plant, has its origins in the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. This region includes countries such as Mexico, Panama and Colombia. This elegant climbing plant is a member of the Araceae family.
Characteristics
The Monstera deliciosa is distinguished by its large, glossy green leaves adorned with natural hole patterns. The leaves can grow up to 90 cm long. The plant is an epiphyte, which means it naturally grows on the surface of other plants and trees. Moreover, the plant produces large, irregular white flowers, followed by edible fruits that taste somewhat like pineapple.
Care
Taking care of the Monstera deliciosa involves considering its natural habitat; the plant thrives in bright, indirect light and high air humidity. Watering is necessary when the top layer of potting soil feels dry. Avoid overwatering however, as this can lead to root rot. To stimulate growth, a monthly dose of liquid fertilizer during the growing season is advised.
