Origin
The Olea europaea, better known as the olive tree, has its origin in the eastern Mediterranean region. The plant is part of the olive family (Oleaceae). People began to cultivate the tree about 6000 years ago and it has since spread all over the world, especially in areas with a Mediterranean climate.

Characteristics
The Olea europaea is an evergreen tree that belongs to the Oleaceae family. The tree can grow up to 20 metres high, but is usually much smaller. Characteristic are the lance-shaped leaves which are silver-grey on the underside. The tree is also known for its fruit, the olives, which serve as both a source of food and for the production of olive oil.

Care
The Olea europaea requires full sun and well-draining soil. The plant is resistant to drought and can survive temperatures down to -10 degrees Celsius. Although the tree prefers a dry climate, it does need regular watering, especially in the dry summer months. The Olea europaea does not need to be pruned often, but light pruning can help to maintain the shape and stimulate flowering.
