Origin
Olea europaea is a plant species from the olive family that is native to the Mediterranean region. It has been cultivated for thousands of years for its fruit and oil. In addition to the Mediterranean, the plant also occurs in parts of Southwest Asia and North Africa. The species has been further spread by humans to other parts of the world.

Characteristics
Olea europaea is an evergreen tree or shrub that can grow up to about 10 metres tall. The leaves are elongated, leathery, and grey-green in colour with a lighter underside. The tree produces small, white flowers in clusters. The fruit is a drupe, known as the olive, which ripens from green to black.

Care
Olea europaea requires a sunny position and well-draining, dry soil. The species tolerates high temperatures and some drought. The plant grows slowly and requires little fertilisation. Regular pruning encourages the formation of new shoots and fruit.
