Olea europaea (220-280)
Bonsai

Origin
The Olea europaea, primarily known as the olive tree, originally hails from the eastern Mediterranean region, notably around Iran, Syria and Palestine. The tree has a long history, steeped in cultural and religious significance. Today, the Olea europaea largely grows in countries around the Mediterranean region, but is also cultivated in other parts of the world.
Characteristics
The Olea europaea is a slow-growing, evergreen tree that can reach heights of 10 to 20 metres. The leaves of the tree are leathery and shiny dark green on top, silver-grey below. This plant bears small, white fragrant flowers which grow into olives. The olives vary in colour from green to black, depending on ripeness.
Care
Despite the Olea europaea being a hardy tree, it requires specific care for optimal growth. The tree needs a sunny and warm location and well-draining soil to avoid excess water. The Olea europaea is drought resistant, but still requires regular watering, especially during dry periods. Pruning may be necessary to maintain shape, but not during blooming or fruit set, as this can affect the production of olives.
