Origin
The Olea europaea is a plant species native to the Mediterranean region. It naturally grows in countries such as Spain, Italy, Greece, and parts of North Africa. The species has been known and cultivated for its fruit for thousands of years.
Characteristics
Olea europaea is an evergreen tree with distinctive grey, furrowed bark. The leaves are lance-shaped, leathery, and dark green on the upper side, while the underside is silvery-grey. The tree can reach a height of up to ten metres but grows slowly. Small white flowers appear in spring, followed by oval green fruit which ripens to black or purple.
Care
Olea europaea prefers a sunny position and well-drained soil. The plant is drought tolerant and has a moderate need for water. In temperate climates, protection against severe frost is necessary. Pruning regularly encourages compact growth and promotes fruit production.
