Origin
The Podocarpus macrophyllus, otherwise known as Yoekahama, originates from Japan and southern China. There are historical records suggesting that the plant was present in these regions in ancient times. Over the centuries, the plant has been used in religious ceremonies and as an ornamental plant in Japanese gardens.
Characteristics
Podocarpus macrophyllus is a slow-growing, evergreen tree that can reach up to 20 metres in height under ideal conditions. The leaves are leathery and dark green, reminiscent of needles and can reach a length of 10-18 centimetres. The carpels develop into red-purple fruits that offer a striking contrast with the green leaves. The bark is brown to grey and has a rough texture.
Care
Podocarpus macrophyllus requires rich, well-draining soil. Although the tree can tolerate some drought, it prefers moderately moist soil. Ensure full sun or light shade for the best growing conditions. It is good practice to prune the plant regularly to maintain a desirable shape and promote lush growth.
