Origin
The Sesamothamnus lugardii, also known as the Sesame Bush, is a native plant species of Southwest Africa. This plant can primarily be found in Namibia and Angola, where it grows on dry, rocky slopes and in river beds. It is mainly the extreme climatic conditions of these regions that give the plant its unique characteristics.

Characteristics
One of the main characteristics of the Sesamothamnus lugardii is its extraordinarily swollen and knotted trunks which are twisted and branched. The plant can reach a height of about three metres and the trunk can become up to a metre in diameter. The leaves of the Sesamothamnus lugardii are small, dull green, and oval. The plant flowers in the late dry season, producing small, trumpet-shaped flowers that are mostly white or light pink in colour.

Care
The Sesamothamnus lugardii requires minimal care, partly due to the extreme conditions in which it thrives in the wild. The plant has minimal water requirements, whereby overwatering can be more harmful than a water deficit. The Sesamothamnus lugardii tolerates direct sunlight and heat well, but requires good drainage to prevent root rot. Pruning of the plant is usually not recommended unless needed for shaping or space.
