Carex oshimensis 'Evercolor Eversheen'
F00004005
Origin
The Hakonechloa macra originates from Japan, where it grows in the forests around Mount Hakone, hence the name. This ornamental grass was discovered and first documented at the end of the 18th century by the German doctor and botanist Philipp Franz Balthasar von Siebold. However, the plant only became primarily known in Western gardens in the 1970s.
Characteristics
Hakonechloa macra is a deciduous, elegantly overhanging grass variety with bright green leaves. The plant is also known as ‘Hakone Grass’. In its wild form, the Hakonechloa reaches a growth height of about 60 to 90 centimetres. From summer to autumn, the plant bears plume-shaped flowers that grow hanging from the stems.
Care
Hakonechloa macra is an easy-to-care-for plant. It grows well in partial to full shade and does not tolerate direct sunlight. The soil must be well-draining but constantly moist, which means that regular watering is necessary. For optimal growth, it is advised to split and replant the plant if it becomes too large in the early spring.
