Origin
Miscanthus x giganteus is a hybrid ornamental grass originally from East Asia. It is the result of a cross between Miscanthus sinensis and Miscanthus sacchariflorus. This species is often cultivated in Europe and North America, especially for use as an energy crop. The plant was introduced for its high biomass yield and adaptability to different climates.
Characteristics
Miscanthus x giganteus is a perennial, grass-like plant that can reach a height of three to four metres. The leaves are long, narrow, and arch gracefully. This plant forms dense clumps and has sturdy, upright stems. In autumn, the foliage often turns yellow to brown. The inflorescence consists of plumes that may be silvery-grey to pale purple.
Care
Miscanthus x giganteus grows best in well-drained soils with sufficient nutrients. The plant tolerates both full sun and partial shade. Regular watering is especially important during dry spells in the first growing season. After each winter, the stems can be cut back to ground level to encourage new growth. The plant is hardy and requires little maintenance throughout the growing season.
