Origin
The Caryota mitis, also known as the fishtail palm, originates from tropical Southeast Asia. This type of palm tree grows wild in rainforests, in both lowlands and mountainous areas. As the Caryota mitis spreads easily, it can also be found in other tropical areas such as Northern Australia.

Characteristics
The Caryota mitis is an elegant, stately palm tree that can reach a height of 12 to 15 meters in its natural habitat, but in domestic conditions, the height is limited to approximately 2 meters. The leaves of this plant, which are shiny green in colour and have a fishtail shape, lend the plant its nickname. A distinctive feature of the Caryota mitis is that it's multi-trunked, which means it has multiple trunks. Each of these trunks blooms only once and then dies off, with new trunks being produced continuously.

Care
Care for the Caryota mitis is relatively simple, although the plant has specific needs to be able to thrive. For instance, the palm needs a light spot, but without direct sunlight. It's advisable to water the plant regularly but sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out lightly between watering to prevent root rot. High humidity is beneficial for the growth of the Caryota mitis, so it may be useful to regularly spray the plant with water. Finally, it's recommended to feed the Caryota mitis from time to time with a slow-release fertiliser specifically suitable for palm trees.
