Origin
The Cocos nucifera, better known as the coconut palm, originally hails from the Indian archipelago and the warm coastal areas of the Pacific Ocean. Through human activities, the palm has now spread throughout many tropical regions globally. The plant prefers high temperatures and high humidity, growing best in areas that experience heavy rainfall all year round.

Characteristics
A distinguishing characteristic of the Cocos nucifera is its long, straight trunk that can reach heights of 20 to 30 metres. The leaves are pinnate and can grow up to 6 metres long. The flowers are small, dull yellow and grow in clustered bunches. The fruit is the commonly recognised coconut, a large, round nut with a hard fibrous casing and an interior of edible, white flesh.

Care
The coconut palm flowers and fruits under warm, tropical conditions. The plant requires consistently warm temperatures and plenty of sunlight. It's essential to water it regularly and fertilise it with nutrient solution rich in potassium and magnesium. The plant cannot tolerate frost, and in colder climates, it will only survive if kept in a heated and well-lit greenhouse.
