Origin
Hyophorbe lagenicaulis is a palm species native to the island of Mauritius, located in the Indian Ocean. This plant primarily grows in low-lying coastal areas. Due to deforestation and the loss of its natural habitat, the species has become rare in the wild.

Characteristics
Hyophorbe lagenicaulis is characterised by its distinctive, bottle-shaped trunk, which becomes wider at the base as the plant ages. The trunk is smooth and light grey in colour, with clearly visible scars from fallen leaf stems. The leaves are compound, glossy green, and arch gracefully from the top of the trunk. The plant grows relatively slowly and, under optimal conditions, reaches a height of up to 3 to 6 metres. At maturity, the palm develops short inflorescences with small, white flowers.

Care
This species grows best at a constant temperature above 16 degrees Celsius. Hyophorbe lagenicaulis does not tolerate low temperatures and is sensitive to frost. The palm requires a well-draining soil and a sunny position with sufficient light. Regular, moderate watering is desired, ensuring the roots do not remain wet for prolonged periods. In temperate climates, this plant is most often grown as a pot plant for indoors or conservatories.
