Livistona chinensis (550-650)
Stem
4LICHRS95
Origin
The Livistona chinensis is a palm native to the subtropical and tropical regions of East Asia. The species naturally occurs in southern Japan, Taiwan and parts of China. In these regions, the plant mainly grows in coastal areas and along the edges of forests. Due to its ornamental value, it is widely planted in subtropical and Mediterranean regions around the world.
Characteristics
Livistona chinensis is characterised by a single, upright trunk that becomes more robust with age. The leaves are large, fan-shaped and deeply divided, with thin, graceful segments at the ends. In its natural habitat, mature plants can reach a height of up to ten to fifteen metres. The leaf stems are lined with small spines along the edges. The plant produces modest flower clusters composed of numerous small, yellowish flowers.
Care
Livistona chinensis requires plenty of light and tolerates direct sunlight well. This palm thrives in airy, well-draining potting soil that should be kept slightly moist. The roots cannot tolerate waterlogged conditions for long, so good drainage is essential. The species prefers a moderate temperature, with a minimum of around five degrees Celsius. Regular misting of the leaves helps to maintain humidity around the plant.
