Origin
The Licuala grandis, also known as the Ruffled Fan Palm, originates from the tropical rainforests of Malaysia and Thailand. This country is strewn with a host of biodiversity, causing this species of palm to thrive in an environment chock-full of nutrients and warmth. The plant enjoys high levels of humidity, a characteristic that harks back to its origins in the moist, tropical forests.

Characteristics
The Licuala grandis exudes exoticism with its elegant fan-shaped leaves that form a striking, almost completely circular pattern. These leaves can reach a diameter of up to 60 centimetres, which lends the plant an impressive appearance. The stems of the palm are relatively short and slender, varying from 5 to 10 feet in their mature state. The palm also produces small, spatula-shaped orange fruits.

Care
For optimal growth, the Licuala grandis requires well-drained soil and plenty of warmth. The plant cannot withstand severe frost and requires a minimum temperature of 15 degrees Celsius in order to grow. The Licuala grandis needs to be watered regularly, but the soil should completely dry out between waterings to avoid root rot. Partial to full shade is ideal for this species of palm, as direct sunlight can damage the leaves. The plant can be cultivated indoors in a pot, but it has more room to grow outdoors.
