DescriptionSpecifications

Origin
The Phoenix dactylifera, also known as the date palm, originates from the Middle East and North Africa. It's one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world and has played a significant role in the history and economy of these regions. For instance, the ancient Egyptians used the fruits from the date palm as food and the leaves and fibres to make a variety of products.

Characteristics
Phoenix dactylifera is a slow-growing palm tree that can reach up to 30 metres in height. The plant has bluish-green pinnate leaves that can grow up to 4 meters in length and have prickly tips. The clusters of fruit, known as dates, are typically hidden high up in the tree amongst the foliage. When ripe, the dates are brown in colour, sweet in taste, and highly nutritious.

Care
In its natural habitat, the Phoenix dactylifera is extremely drought-resistant and thrives in hot, sunny climates with well-drained soil. For optimum growth, sufficient watering is required, particularly during fruit growth. Although this plant can be grown indoors, it will not bear fruit under these conditions. Pruning is typically not required, other than for removing dead leaves and making room for new growth.
