Origin
Rhapis excelsa originates from Asia, particularly Southeast China. The species is widely cultivated in subtropical regions. This palm naturally grows in the shaded understorey of forests. Rhapis excelsa has long been popular as an ornamental plant. The plant was first introduced to Europe in the 18th century.

Characteristics
Rhapis excelsa is a slow-growing palm species with a maximum height of around four metres. The plant has fan-shaped leaves with deep divisions. The trunks are slender and resemble bamboo canes, contributing to its distinctive appearance. The leaves are glossy, dark green, and have a leathery texture. The plant forms dense clumps as it produces many shoots from the base.

Care
Rhapis excelsa grows best in moderately bright, indirect light. The palm tolerates lower temperatures and average humidity well. The substrate should be kept lightly moist, avoiding long periods of soggy roots. Regularly dusting the leaves supports the healthy development of the plant. Compared to other palms, Rhapis excelsa has a modest need for feeding.
