Origin
Rhapis excelsa originates from Southeast Asia, particularly China and Taiwan. In its natural habitat, the plant grows in shaded, humid forests. Rhapis excelsa has been cultivated for centuries. The species became popular as a houseplant in Europe during the nineteenth century.
Characteristics
Rhapis excelsa is a compact palm with fan-shaped, deeply divided leaves. The leaves are glossy green and consist of narrow segments ending in a pointed tip. The shoots grow closely together from an underground rhizome, resulting in a bushy appearance. The stems are covered with fibrous brown material. Rhapis excelsa remains relatively low-growing and is slow to develop.
Care
Rhapis excelsa requires a moderate amount of water and can tolerate short dry periods. The plant prefers a spot with indirect light. A consistent temperature is beneficial for growth. It grows best in airy, well-draining potting soil. Regular watering without allowing the roots to remain wet for extended periods is recommended.
