Origin
The Rhapis humilis, more commonly known as the Slender Lady Palm, has its origin in South China and Taiwan. It grows wild in mountainous regions and is often found at altitudes of up to 900 metres. This species has been in cultivation in Asia since ancient times and was brought to Europe in the 17th century.
Characteristics
The Rhapis humilis is a slow grower that can reach a height of between 1.5 and 3 metres. The plant has multiple, slender, fibre-covered stalks that grow from a single base. The leaves are palmate, deeply lobed and spread over several segments. They have a leathery texture and are dark green in colour.
Care
Although the Rhapis humilis is generally easy to care for, it requires specific conditions to thrive. It performs best in semi-shade to bright indirect light and requires a well-drained potting soil. The plant prefers a humid environment, so regular misting is recommended. Watering should be moderate, allowing the soil to dry out somewhat between watering. Over-watering can lead to root rot.
