Origin
Trachycarpus fortunei is a palm species native to central and eastern Asia. It naturally occurs in countries such as China, Japan and Myanmar. In Europe, the plant is mainly used as an ornamental palm in gardens and parks. This species was introduced to Europe in the mid-nineteenth century.

Characteristics
Trachycarpus fortunei is a hardy fan palm with an upright, fibrous trunk. Mature specimens can reach a height of 12 to 15 metres. The leaves are large, palmately divided and dark green in colour. The trunk is covered with a distinctive layer of fibrous material. In spring, mature plants produce clusters of yellow flowers.

Care
Trachycarpus fortunei grows best in a sheltered location with well-draining soil. The species tolerates both sun and partial shade. Regular watering is necessary, especially during dry periods. In colder climates, protection from severe frost may be required. Feeding in spring encourages healthy growth.
