Origin
The Trachycarpus fortunei is a palm species originally from the mountainous regions of Central and Eastern China. In its natural habitat, this plant can be found at altitudes of up to approximately 2,400 metres. The species was introduced to Europe in the 19th century and has since spread to different parts of the world. The palm grows both in forests and along riverbanks.

Characteristics
This palm features a straight, usually slender trunk covered with fibrous remnants of old leaf stalks. The leaves are fan-shaped and split like a hand, with a bright green colour. Under ideal conditions, Trachycarpus fortunei can reach a height of up to 12 to 15 metres. The hanging, yellow flowers grow in clusters and typically develop in spring. The plant is hardy and can withstand temperatures as low as around -15°C.

Care
Trachycarpus fortunei grows best in well-draining soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. Regular, but not excessive, watering supports healthy growth. The palm prefers a position in full sun to partial shade. Fertilising during the growing season helps to maintain a lush appearance. Protection against extreme frost may be necessary to prevent damage to the leaves.
