Origin
The Trachycarpus fortunei, also known as the Chinese fan palm, has its roots in China. This type of palm is primarily found in the mountainous regions of China, where the climate is relatively colder. This explains why the Trachycarpus fortunei belongs to the most winter-hardy palms. Initially, the plant was cultivated mainly for its fibres, used in the manufacture of ropes and mats, but later it took on a more decorative function.

Characteristics
The Trachycarpus fortunei is a graceful, evergreen palm with fan-shaped leaves. The plant can grow up to 15 metres high, although it usually stays smaller in garden conditions. The trunk is covered with fibres, a remnant of the old leaf base, which form a protective layer against the cold. Unique to this type of palm is the upward growth of the leaves, which provides a beautiful contrast with its hanging clusters of yellow flowers.

Care
The Trachycarpus fortunei is an easy palm to care for. It prefers a sunny or semi-shaded position and well-draining soil. Although the palm is moderately drought-tolerant, it thrives better with regular watering, especially in the warmer months. It is important to protect the plant from extreme cold by applying a layer of mulch around the base in the winter months. Annual fertilising in the spring promotes the plant's growth and health. Although the Trachycarpus fortunei can withstand wind well, it is advisable to protect young plants to prevent root damage.
