Origin
The Washingtonia filifera, also known as the California fan palm, has its origin in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. The plant is often found in oasis ecosystems, where it can enjoy an abundance of water and bright sunshine. Interestingly, this type of palm is one of the few capable of surviving in desert landscapes. This is thanks to the deep, extensive root systems, which help to find underground water.

Characteristics
The Washingtonia filifera is an impressive sight, with large fan-shaped leaves that can reach up to 4 metres in diameter. The trunk, which can grow up to 18 metres tall, is covered with characteristic fibrous scales. The plant also produces a rich harvest of seeds, which are often spread by birds and other animals. In later growth phases, greenish or white flowers may emerge, developing into hanging clusters of 4 to 6 metres long.

Care
Despite its desert origin, the Washingtonia filifera is not very drought-tolerant and requires regular, deep watering, especially during the growing seasons. Although the palm can survive harsh conditions, it thrives better in sandy or loamy soil. Locations with full sun are recommended for optimal growth. Moreover, although the palm can tolerate temperatures down to -10 degrees Celsius, frost damage is avoided as much as possible by providing suitable winter protection.
