DescriptionSpecifications

Origin
Washingtonia filifera is native to the southwestern United States, particularly California, Arizona, and parts of northern Mexico. The species naturally occurs in desert-like areas and oases, and is often found along riverbeds and springs. This palm is well adapted to dry, warm climates with occasional water availability.

Characteristics
Washingtonia filifera is a large, upright palm with a single, thick trunk that can reach heights of over 15 metres. The leaves are large and fan-shaped, composed of rigid, segmented leaflets with distinctive white fibres. These fibres often hang like threads along the edges of the leaves, giving the palm a striking appearance. The trunk is surrounded by old, dried leaf sheaths that remain attached and hang down in a skirt-like fashion. The inflorescence consists of long clusters of small, cream-coloured flowers.

Care
Washingtonia filifera requires plenty of sunlight and performs best in well-draining, sandy soil. Regular watering is important, especially during dry periods, although the plant can also tolerate short spells of drought. The palm is moderately hardy and can withstand light frost. Excess or dead leaves can be removed to encourage growth. The main growing season is in spring and summer.
