Origin
The Laurus nobilis, better known as the bay tree, has its origin in the Mediterranean area. This historical species typically grows in moderate and subtropical climates, on mountain slopes and in woodland landscapes. The laurel tree holds a special place in the history and mythology of ancient cultures, such as the Greeks and Romans, where it symbolised wisdom and victory.
Characteristics
Laurus nobilis is an evergreen shrub that can grow into a tree up to 10-15 metres high. The plant is known for its dark green, shiny, oval-shaped leaves that emit an aromatic scent when crushed. White flowers decorate the plant in spring, followed by small, black berries in autumn. The leaves of the plant are widely used in the culinary world.
Care
The Laurus nobilis requires a specific care routine to thrive. The plant prefers well-draining soil and a sunny to partially shaded location. In winter, the plant needs to be protected from cold wind and frost. Bay trees are sensitive to waterlogging, so moderate watering and allowing it to dry between waterings is essential. For healthy growth, it is recommended to lightly prune the plant and add fertiliser annually in early spring.
