Olea europaea (220-280)
Product number : 5OLEUR074Origin
The Olea europaea, also known as the olive tree, is a plant species that originally originated from the Mediterranean region. This tree has been alongside human civilisations for thousands of years and plays a role in various mythologies. Images of the tree have been found on early artefacts from the Minoan civilisation on Crete. It grows in parts of Asia and Africa as well.
Characteristics
The Olea europaea is a long-living, evergreen tree known for its resistance to drought, diseases, and insects. This species can reach a height of 10 to 20 metres, but dwarf variations are also available that are suitable for smaller spaces. The leaves are silver-coloured, lanceolate, and leathery. The fruit of the tree, the olive, which is green when young and eventually turns black as it matures, is characteristic.
Care
The Olea europaea requires a well-draining, rocky or sandy, soil and a location with a lot of sunlight. Although the tree is resistant to drought, regular watering during dry periods will contribute to healthier growth and fruit production. Pruning is recommended to maintain the shape of the tree and promote health. During feeding in the spring and autumn, specific olive tree nutrition can be used to stimulate optimal growth and fruit set. Although this species is hardy, experts recommend protecting the tree during extremely cold temperatures.
