Olea europaea (240-300)
Product number : 5OLEUS064Origin
The Olea europaea, known as the olive tree, is a species of tree hailing from the Eastern Mediterranean. It carries a long history that stretches back thousands of years, deeply rooted in Greek mythology and the Bible. Olive trees have served as important symbols in numerous ancient cultures, associated with peace, wisdom, and prosperity.
Characteristics
The Olea europaea is an evergreen tree that can reach heights of up to 10 meters, though it tends to remain smaller in domestic environments. This tree, characterised by its thick, twisted trunk and silvery-grey leaves, bears an abundance of small, white flowers which later produce olives. The olives shift in colour from green to black, depending on their maturity. Despite bearing both flowers and fruit in a growing season, it is unlikely that olive trees will yield fruit in colder climates.
Care
Caring for the Olea europaea requires full sun and well-draining soil. Unlike many other plant species, the olive tree thrives in drought and is highly resistant to dry conditions. Moderate watering is necessary, with overwatering strictly to be avoided as this can cause root rot. Olive trees also need to be pruned regularly to encourage healthy growth and ensure that sunlight reaches all parts of the tree. Although these trees require minimal attention, good care and favourable growth conditions can ensure a robust and healthy Olea europaea.
