Origin
The Olea europaea, also known as the olive tree, originally originates from the eastern Mediterranean region. This tree is both emblematic for the Mediterranean region as well as the cultures and civilisations that have originated there. The olive tree belongs to the oldest cultivated trees in the world and has been a source of food and oil for over 6000 years.

Characteristics
The Olea europaea is a long-lived, evergreen tree that can grow up to 10-12 meters high under ideal growth conditions. The tree can be easily recognised by its knobbly, twisted trunk and its lance-shaped grey-green leaves. The olive tree produces small white flowers, followed by the familiar edible olives. The fruits are initially green and change over time into a dark purple-black colour.

Care
Olea europaea trees prefer a sunny, sheltered location and well-drained soil. Although they can withstand some drought, they perform best with regular, moderate watering. The olive tree is quite resistant to most pests and diseases. Providing an annual feed of a balanced fertiliser can help maintain healthy growth and fruit production. Pruning can take place in the spring to shape and to remove dead or diseased branches.
