Origin
The Phormium tenax 'Variegatum', otherwise known as New Zealand flax, is a native plant from New Zealand. The Maoris, the indigenous people of New Zealand, have used this plant for centuries for their traditional textile production. The plant has been introduced to various parts of the world for landscaping and horticulture.

Characteristics
This perennial, evergreen plant has long, sturdy leaves that grow in clumps. The leaves are striped with yellow and green, hence the term 'variegatum'. They can reach a height of two to three metres. From the late spring to the early summer, the Phormium tenax 'Variegatum' produces long flower stems with red or yellow flowers.

Care
The Phormium tenax 'Variegatum' requires full sun to partial shade and can vary in drought and frost tolerance. The plant demands well-drained, fertile soil and should be fertilised regularly. While drought tolerant, regular watering during dry periods will improve the plant’s growth and overall health. Prune dead or damaged leaves if necessary to maintain and rejuvenate the plant.
