Origin
Vitis vinifera is a plant species originally native to the area around the Mediterranean, Western Europe, and Southwest Asia. It has been cultivated for thousands of years for grape production. Today, Vitis vinifera is grown worldwide, especially in temperate climates.
Characteristics
Vitis vinifera is a deciduous climbing plant that attaches itself using tendrils. The leaves are palmate and usually deep green in colour. In spring, small green flowers appear, which later develop into clusters of grapes. The fruit ranges in colour from green to blue-black and is rich in juice.
Care
Vitis vinifera thrives best in well-drained soils. The plant requires plenty of sunlight for optimal leaf and fruit development. Regular pruning encourages fruit production and keeps the plant healthy. A sheltered position with good air circulation reduces the risk of fungal diseases.
