Origin
Photinia x fraseri 'Red Robin' is a hybrid ornamental shrub that originally resulted from a cross between Photinia glabra and Photinia serratifolia. The plant’s origin lies in Asia, particularly in parts of China and Japan. 'Red Robin' was developed in the twentieth century and is widely used in both urban and private gardens. The species is very popular as a hedge or solitary plant in Europe.
Characteristics
Photinia x fraseri 'Red Robin' is an evergreen shrub. It is characterised by bright red young foliage, which later turns glossy dark green. In spring, clusters of white flowers appear. The leaves are oval-shaped with a leathery texture. The shrub can reach a height of two to three metres.
Care
Photinia x fraseri 'Red Robin' grows best in a sunny to partially shaded position. The plant does not have strict soil requirements, as long as the soil is well-draining. Regular pruning promotes compact growth and encourages the production of new red leaves. This species is reasonably hardy and tolerant of air pollution. Photinia x fraseri 'Red Robin' is often used for hedges, borders, or as a specimen plant.
