Origin
The Cortaderia selloana, also known as the pampas grass, originates from South America. It primarily grows in the pampas of Argentina, but also in Brazil and Chile. The plant was brought to Europe in the 19th century and is now used worldwide as an ornamental plant.
Characteristics
Distinctive features of the Cortaderia selloana are the high, elegant white or pink plumes, which provide an impressive spectacle from August to October. The plant has long, sharp leaves of a grey-green colour. The plant's height usually lies around 2-3 metres, but can grow up to 4 metres under optimal growing conditions.
Care
The Cortaderia selloana prefers a sunny location and needs well-draining soil to grow. Although the plant is highly resistant to drought, it appreciates regular watering during dry periods. In winter, the plant can withstand temperatures down to -10 degrees Celsius, but it is advisable to protect the plant in case of severe frost. Pruning can be done in the spring, with the old plumes and dead leaves being removed to make way for new growth.
