Origin
The Acorus gramineus mix tray, also known as the sweet flag, originally hails from Asia but can now also be found in Europe and North America. This perennial belongs to the Acoraceae family, a plant family that is underrepresented in our part of the world. The sweet flag primarily grows in marshlands and around the fringes of lakes and ponds.
Characteristics
The Acorus gramineus mix tray has narrow, grass-like leaves that grow in a fan shape from an enlarged rhizome. The leaves are bright green to yellowish in colour and can grow up to 30 centimetres high. The plant produces small, inconspicuous flowers that appear in a whorl around the stem. The rhizome has a pleasant, slightly sweet scent.
Care
The sweet flag prefers a sunny location but can also thrive in semi-shade. It is a water-loving plant that thrives in moist soil types. The plant prefers to overwinter under water to survive during frost periods. In the spring, when growth begins again, the plant can be pruned by removing the old leaves. Regular fertilisation promotes healthy growth and flowering.
