Origin
The Erica x darleyensis, also known as Winter Heath, is a hybrid between Erica erigena and Erica carnea and is characterised by a hybrid origin. This plant has its origins in the area around the Mediterranean Sea. It has been specially cultivated to perform well in a wide range of soil types and climates, contributing to its popularity in the gardening industry.
Characteristics
The Erica x darleyensis is an evergreen shrub known for its beautiful pink or white flowers. The plant reaches an average height of 40 to 60 cm, with a spread growth habit and small, needle-like, dark green leaves. The blooming period of the Erica x darleyensis runs from November to April, during which it produces colourful bell-shaped flowers, giving gardens a vibrant look in the winter.
Care
In terms of care, the Erica x darleyensis prefers well-drained, acidic soil and a sunny to semi-shady location. Heavy pruning is generally not necessary, but the plant can be lightly pruned back after blooming to promote compact growth. Although the plant has some tolerance for drought, regular watering during dry periods will support optimal growth. It is also recommended to add heath fertiliser during planting and each spring to promote flowering.
