Origin
Hedera helix originates from Europe and parts of Western Asia. The plant naturally grows in forests, on rocks and along walls. Its range extends beyond Europe into parts of North Africa. The species has become naturalised in many regions.

Characteristics
Hedera helix is an evergreen, woody climbing plant. It has dark green, lobed leaves with a leathery texture. The leaf veins are noticeably pale in colour. Using aerial roots, the plant attaches itself to surfaces such as walls or trees. In autumn, spherical, yellow-green flower clusters appear, followed by black berries.

Care
Hedera helix tolerates both shade and (partial) sun. It grows well in moist, well-drained soil. Regular pruning limits its size and encourages compact growth. The plant is hardy and can withstand a range of temperatures. Fertiliser is generally not necessary when the plant is grown directly in the ground.
