Origin
Ajuga reptans is a plant that is native to Europe. The species originally grows in moist forests, meadows, and along woodland edges. Ajuga reptans belongs to the mint family (Lamiaceae). In various temperate regions, this plant is also used as ground cover.
Characteristics
Ajuga reptans is a perennial, low-growing plant that spreads by runners (stolons). The leaves are oval to elongated, glossy, and dark green, and may display a purplish hue. In spring, upright spikes of blue-purple flowers appear. The flowers are two-lipped, small, and closely packed. The plant typically reaches a height of 10 to 30 centimetres.
Care
Ajuga reptans grows well in humus-rich, moist soil and prefers a spot in partial shade or shade. The plant can spread rapidly due to the formation of runners. Regular removal of spent flower stems helps maintain a tidy appearance. Ajuga reptans is hardy and tolerates low temperatures. The plant is generally not susceptible to diseases.
