Origin
Astilbe (Arendsii Grp) 'Fanal' belongs to the Arendsii group, a collection of hybrid Astilbes developed by the German breeder Georg Arends. This group originated from crosses between various Astilbe species, mainly from Asia. 'Fanal' was introduced in the early twentieth century.
Characteristics
Astilbe 'Fanal' is a perennial with striking, deep reddish flowers. The inflorescence consists of plumes that are held on sturdy stems and reach a height of around 60 centimetres. The foliage is deeply incised, glossy, and dark green, sometimes with a reddish tint. Flowering usually takes place in June and July. The plumes retain their colour for a long time and are eye-catching in the garden.
Care
Astilbe 'Fanal' grows best in moist, humus-rich soil. The plant prefers a spot in partial shade to shade. Regular watering is necessary to prevent the soil from drying out. The plant is hardy and can remain outside year-round in the UK. Fertilisation is often applied at the start of the growing season to encourage growth.
