Origin
Astilbe belongs to the saxifrage family (Saxifragaceae) and originates from East Asia, particularly China, Japan, and Korea. In the wild, the plant mainly grows along forest edges and in moist areas. Over time, Astilbe has spread worldwide as an ornamental plant. Through breeding, countless hybrid varieties have been developed, which are collectively offered as Astilbe mix.
Characteristics
Astilbe mix consists of various species and cultivars that differ in height, flower colour, and leaf shape. The plant is characterised by striking, plume-like flower clusters in shades such as white, pink, red, and purple. The pinnate leaves are deeply incised and dark green in colour. Astilbe flowers during the summer months and can reach a height of 40 to 90 centimetres, depending on the variety. The flowers attract butterflies and other insects.
Care
Astilbe mix grows best in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. A spot in (partial) shade is suitable for optimal growth and flowering. The plant does not tolerate prolonged drought and requires sufficient water, especially during warm periods. To enjoy the plant for a long time, old foliage can be removed after winter. Fertilising in spring supports the growth and flowering of the Astilbe.
