Origin
The Fagus sylvatica 'Dawyck Gold', also known as the Golden Columnar Beech, is a variant of the European Beech. This unique cultivar originated in the United States and was introduced into the United Kingdom in the 1970s. The plant owes its name to the Dawyck Botanic Garden in Peebleshire, Scotland, where it was first cultivated.

Characteristics
Characteristic of the Fagus sylvatica 'Dawyck Gold' is its narrow, columnar growth with a striking golden yellow to golden green colour. The leaves change in spring from gold yellow to bright green in the summer and reveal a striking bronze colour in the autumn. The plant can reach a height of 12 to 15 metres and has a width of about 3 metres. This makes it ideal for creating wind breaks or privacy screens.

Care
When it comes to the care of the Fagus sylvatica 'Dawyck Gold', this plant requires well-drained, fertile soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. It also prefers sunlight to partial shade to achieve optimum colour and growth. In dry periods, it is recommended to water the plant adequately, although it is fairly drought tolerant once established. Pruning can take place annually in late winter to maintain the columnar shape and remove dead or damaged branches.
