Origin
Allium stipitatum 'White Giant' belongs to the ornamental onions and originates from Central and Southwest Asia. In its native habitat, this species mainly grows on sunny, rocky slopes and open fields. It has been cultivated for its striking flowering and is now used in ornamental gardens worldwide. Characteristics
Allium stipitatum 'White Giant' is a bulbous plant in the Amaryllidaceae family. It has long, hollow leaves that emerge from the base. During flowering, large, spherical white flower heads up to 20 centimetres in diameter appear on strong, upright stems. The mature plant reaches a height of around 120 to 150 centimetres. It typically flowers in May and June.
Care
This plant prefers a sunny position with well-drained soil. It does not tolerate waterlogged conditions. The bulbs are usually planted in autumn at a depth of approximately 15 to 20 centimetres. After flowering, the above-ground parts die back in summer. In general, the plant is hardy in temperate climates.
