Origin
Chamaecyparis nootkatensis is a tree species native to the western parts of North America. Its natural range extends from Alaska to the north-western United States. This species naturally grows in moist, cool, and often mountainous locations. It can be found in temperate rainforests and along coastal areas.
Characteristics
Chamaecyparis nootkatensis usually reaches a height of 20 to 35 metres and has a conical growth habit. The bark is thin, fibrous, and grey-brown in colour. The leaves are scale-like, dark green, and held close to the twigs. The cones are small, round to egg-shaped, and dark brown when mature. The species is distinguished by its pendulous branches and graceful appearance.
Care
Chamaecyparis nootkatensis grows well in moist, well-drained soil. A partially shaded to full sun location is preferred. The tree is hardy and tolerates cold temperatures. Young trees require regular watering, while mature specimens are more drought-tolerant. Pruning is not necessary to maintain its natural shape.
