Origin
Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Wissel's Saguaro' is a cultivar of the Lawson cypress. The species Chamaecyparis lawsoniana originates from the western part of North America. 'Wissel's Saguaro' has been selectively bred for its unique growth habit. This selection has arisen within the culture of ornamental conifers.
Characteristics
Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Wissel's Saguaro' is a slow-growing, evergreen conifer. The plant displays an upright growth form with irregularly placed, ascending branches reminiscent of the saguaro cactus. The foliage is blue-green in colour with a fine, scaly texture. The branch tips may point in various directions, giving the plant a distinctive appearance. A mature specimen usually reaches a height of 1 to 1.5 metres.
Care
This conifer grows best in well-drained, humus-rich soil. It is suitable for a position in full sun to partial shade. Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Wissel's Saguaro' is very hardy. Pruning is generally not necessary to maintain its characteristic shape. Regular watering after planting encourages good root development.
