Origin
Abies lasiocarpa 'Compacta' is a dwarf form of Abies lasiocarpa, native to North America. The species occurs naturally in mountainous regions of the western United States and Canada. 'Compacta' has been selected for its compact growth habit. In cultivation, this variety is often used as an ornamental plant in gardens and parks.
Characteristics
Abies lasiocarpa 'Compacta' is a compact shrub with slow growth and a dense, cushion-shaped habit. The needles are short, blue-green in colour, and feel soft to the touch. At maturity, the plant typically reaches a height of around 80 to 100 centimetres. The shoots are finely branched and grey-green in colour.
Care
This plant thrives best in moist, well-draining, and slightly acidic soil. A spot in full sun to partial shade is suitable. Abies lasiocarpa 'Compacta' is tolerant of cold temperatures and moderate wind. Pruning is rarely necessary due to its slow growth.
