Origin
Berberis thunbergii 'Harlequin' is a cultivated variety of the Japanese barberry. The species Berberis thunbergii originates from Japan. 'Harlequin' has been selected for its striking leaf colouring. This cultivar is used as an ornamental shrub in many parts of Europe.

Characteristics
Berberis thunbergii 'Harlequin' has distinctive purple-red leaves with white and pink speckles. The shrub can reach a height of around one metre. In spring, small yellow flowers appear. During autumn, the plant produces conspicuous red berries and the foliage takes on an even more attractive autumn colour.

Care
The plant prefers a spot in full sun or partial shade. Berberis thunbergii 'Harlequin' is hardy and tolerates various soil types. This cultivar has a compact growth habit and responds well to pruning. The shrub is suitable both as a specimen plant and for use in hedges.
