Origin
Astilbe japonica originates from Japan. This plant belongs to the Saxifragaceae family. Since the late nineteenth century, the species has also been cultivated in Europe. Its native habitats are moist woodlands and riverbanks.
Characteristics
Astilbe japonica is a perennial with a compact growth habit. The plant has finely divided, pinnate leaves that are dark green in colour. From May to July, upright flower stems appear bearing plume-like blooms in shades of white or pink. The flowers are small and closely packed in a striking inflorescence. The height usually ranges between 50 and 80 centimetres.
Care
Astilbe japonica thrives best in moist, humus-rich soil with good drainage. Partially shaded locations are ideal for optimal growth. Regular watering is necessary, particularly during dry periods. The plant does not tolerate prolonged drought. Transplanting is best carried out in spring or autumn.
