Origin
Abelia grandiflora is a hybrid plant, originally developed in the 19th century from crosses between Abelia chinensis and Abelia uniflora. Its origin is in China, where the ‘Abelia’ was first discovered. Abelia grandiflora is now widely used as an ornamental shrub in gardens and parks around the world. The species belongs to the honeysuckle family (Caprifoliaceae).

Characteristics
Abelia grandiflora is a semi-evergreen shrub that can reach a height of up to 2 metres. It has glossy, dark green leaves, which often turn red or purple towards winter. Its distinctive bell-shaped, pale pink to white flowers appear in clusters from June well into autumn. The shrub features graceful, arching branches and a broad, bushy growth habit. During the flowering period, the plant attracts numerous insects.

Care
Abelia grandiflora grows best in a sunny to partially shaded position. The plant prefers a well-drained, moist soil. Regular pruning encourages a compact habit and abundant flowering. The shrub is reasonably hardy, but young plants may need protection during severe frost. Fertilising in spring supports the development of flowers and foliage.
