Origin
Clematis vitalba is a plant species from the buttercup family that occurs naturally in Europe. The species is mostly found along woodland edges, in hedgerows and scrub, often on calcareous soils. Clematis vitalba also occurs in parts of Western Asia and North Africa. In several countries, this species is considered a native plant.

Characteristics
Clematis vitalba is a fast-growing, deciduous climbing plant. It can reach a height of 10 to 15 metres. The leaves are compound, usually consisting of five oval leaflets. In summer, small, creamy-white flowers appear in clusters, followed by decorative, fluffy seed heads. The stems are woody and can live up to three years.

Care
Clematis vitalba grows best in a sunny to partially shaded spot with sufficiently moist, well-drained soil. The plant can anchor itself to supports such as trees or fences by means of adventitious roots and tendrils. Clematis vitalba can spread rapidly and may require management to control its growth. For flowering and health, it is important to keep the roots somewhat shaded. Pruning is usually carried out in autumn or early spring.
