Origin
Rosmarinus officinalis 'Prostratus' is a cultivated variety of rosemary. The species has its origin in the Mediterranean region. 'Prostratus' is widely used in Mediterranean gardens. This plant is grown worldwide as an ornamental due to its creeping growth habit.
Characteristics
Rosmarinus officinalis 'Prostratus' is a low-growing, creeping, evergreen shrub. The plant can reach a height of 20 to 30 centimetres and spreads out widely. The leaves are narrow, leathery and aromatic, with a dark green upper side and a white underside. In spring and summer, small blue-purple flowers appear.
Care
This variety thrives best in a sunny position with well-drained soil. The plant tolerates dry conditions and is reasonably hardy. Overwatering can lead to root rot. Regular pruning encourages compact growth and keeps the plant healthy. Fertilising is usually unnecessary when planted in nutrient-rich soil.
