Origin
Berberis darwinii is a plant species originally native to South America, particularly the southern regions of Chile and Argentina. The species belongs to the family Berberidaceae. In Europe, it has been introduced and used as an ornamental shrub since the nineteenth century.
Characteristics
Berberis darwinii is an evergreen, densely branched shrub that can reach up to three metres in height. The leaves are small, oval, and glossy dark green with spiny edges. In spring, striking orange to golden-yellow flowers appear in clusters. After flowering, small blue-black berries develop.
Care
The plant grows well in nearly any well-drained soil. Full sun or partial shade is suitable for its growth and flowering. Berberis darwinii is tolerant of wind and can withstand light drought. Pruning is generally well tolerated and encourages a compact growth habit.
