Origin
Calluna vulgaris 'Zalina' belongs to the Ericaceae family and is a cultivated form of the wild species Calluna vulgaris, which naturally occurs throughout Europe, especially in heathlands and poor soils. The introduction of 'Zalina' as an ornamental plant has resulted in greater variation in colour and foliage. This cultivar was developed for its decorative value in gardens and public green spaces.
Characteristics
Calluna vulgaris 'Zalina' is a compact, hardy shrub with fine, needle-shaped leaves. The foliage displays a striking reddish to bronze tint, particularly in autumn and winter. The plant produces dense, upright clusters of small, purple flowers, with the flowering period lasting from August to October. Typically, the shrub reaches a height of approximately 30 to 40 centimetres.
Care
This heather thrives best in acidic, well-drained soil. It is a light-loving plant that performs optimally in full sun. Regular watering is necessary, especially during dry periods. Calluna vulgaris 'Zalina' does not tolerate prolonged wet conditions around the roots. Pruning after flowering helps to maintain its compact shape and flowering vigour.
